The Boston Red Brigade was founded in 2026 in anticipation of a major labor dispute between the ownership of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association (the MLB players' union) for the 2027 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
It is modeled on European-style football "ultras" fan organizations, and in particular, the Green Brigade fan organization of the Celtic FC club in the Scottish Premiere League. The Green Brigade was founded at a time when the fan experience at their historic home park (Celtic Park in Glasgow) was deteriorating due to corporatization and complacency among the fan base -- conditions that are recognizable today in our own historic Fenway Park.
Like the Green Brigade, the Boston Red Brigade is founded to be openly political: unabashedly left-wing and unashamed in our support of the Boston Red Sox, the MLB Players' union, our immigrant neighbors in the commonwealth and beyond, the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities, and Palestinian liberation.
We are the only anti-fascist, anti-racist, and anti-imperialist fan organization for the Boston Red Sox -- and perhaps in all of professional baseball.
As we grow, we hope to introduce some aspects of European football "ultras" culture into US sports: taking over parts of Fenway Park as an organized bloc, coordinated T-shirt or banner drops, mutual aid campaigns, actions in support of labor or our local community, and hey -- maybe even team chants or songs of our own devising.
